The World Health Organisation (WHO) refers to stress as a ‘global epidemic’. Stress influences everything in our lives; our jobs, our ability to concentrate, control over our emotions, eating habits, how we interact with others, our susceptibility to disease. In totality then, the quality of life.

Recent reports emanating from South Africa, the European Union (EU), Britain and America reflect a recent upsurge in stress amongst employees, negatively impacting job satisfaction, productivity, staff turnover, health, person-to-person relationships and organisational climate.

Stressors in the workplace include:

  • Work overload
  • Under-employment (skills deficit)
  • Over-employment
  • Job insecurity
  • Role diffusion
  • Role confusion
  • Ethnic and cultural differences
  • Technological change
  • Downsizing
  • International and local competition
