  1. Acute retroviral infection
  2. Asymptomatic
  3. Persistent generalised lymphadenopathy

Asymptomatic

  1. Weight loss of more than 10% body weight
  2. Minor mucocutaneous manifestations
  3. Herpes zoster within the last 5 years
  4. Recurrent upper respiratory infections

Symptomatic

  1. Weight loss (same as above)
  2. Unexplained chronic diarrhoea about 1 month
  3. Unexplained prolonged fever
  4. Oral candidiasis
  5. Vulvo-vaginal candidiasis, chronic or poorly responsive to therapy
  6. Oral hairy leukoplakia
  7. Pulmonary tuberculosis
  8. Severe bacterial infections (e.g. pneumonia)

Bedridden 50% of the day during the last month

  1. HIV wasting syndrome
  2. Pneumocystic carinnii pneumonia
  3. Toxoplasmosis of the brain
  4. Cryptosporidiosis with diarrhoea
  5. Cryptosporidiosis, extrapulmonary
  6. Cytomegalovirus
  7. Herpes simplex infections
  8. Progressive multifocal leuco-encephalopathy
  9. Any disseminated endemic mycosis
  10. Candidiasis of the oesophagus, trachea, bronchi or lungs
  11. Disseminated Atypical mycobacteriosis
  12. Non typhoidal salmonella septicaemia
  13. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis
  14. Lymphoma
  15. Kaposi’s sarcoma
  16. HIV encephalopathy
