- Severe bacterial infections (e.g. pneumonia)

- Any disseminated endemic mycosis
- Candidiasis of the oesophagus, trachea, bronchi or lungs
- Disseminated Atypical mycobacteriosis
- Non typhoidal salmonella septicaemia
- Extrapulmonary tuberculosis
- Lymphoma
- Kaposi’s sarcoma
- HIV encephalopathy
