Being on Top Of Things

Decision-making, problem-solving and strategising can only be conducted effectively if it is based on valid, relevant, and reliable information. Leaders need to be “on top of things”, in other words, be informed about what is going on in both the internal and external business environment. When an organisation is able to match what it can do with what it might do, it allows the organisation to pursue its vision through strategic intent.

To determine what we can do (internal health of the organisation) and to determine what we might do (external drivers of strategy) a leader should be competent in:

  1. accessing information, and
  2. interpreting the information.

Building information capacity is thus a prerequisite for sound strategic direction.
