Individuals who have never played the role of mentor may assume that having subject-matter expertise and -experience would be adequate preparation for being a mentor. Zachary (2000), contends that mentors who assume the mentor role without preparing themselves are often disappointed and dissatisfied. She advises potential mentors to reflect on their motivation for engaging in a mentoring relationship and to assess their own readiness for the mentoring relationship.
