Expressing Positive Feelings

View

Giving compliments is an important skill with which you can give feedback to people about aspects of their behaviour, clothing, performance and appearance.

Benefits of Compliments

Compliments reinforce friendships/relationships and when you compliment another person, it creates a positive atmosphere in which you can later discuss negative feelings more easily.

Why We Do Not Give Compliments

We hesitate to give compliments because:

  • We think that a person should know how we feel.
  • It feels stupid.
  • We feel it is his job to do something.
  • We are afraid they will think we want something from them.
  • People may think we are mocking them or are insincere.
  • We are afraid others will feel embarrassed.

Receiving Compliments

It is important to receive a compliment with grace. It requires that you at least say “Thank you” but you may add something else such as expressing appreciation.

When you brush aside a compliment, you are:

  • Telling the person that he has poor taste or that he is dishonest.
  • Punishing him because he is expressing his positive feelings.
  • Reducing the possibility that he will do it again.
