Having looked at what a management team and organisation need to create an atmosphere in which innovation can flourish, it is also important to look at the factors that will do the reverse, i.e.

Inhibit innovation and creativity:

  • Dominance of restrictive vertical relationships
  • Poor lateral communication
  • Limited tools and resources
  • Top down dictates
  • Formal restrictive vehicles for change
  • Reinforcing a culture of inferiority, ie. The best ideas come from outside the organisation
  • Unfocussed innovative activity
  • Unsupported accounting practices.

The effect of these behaviours are that they inhibit innovation and creativity in an organisation. Developing a culture of innovation is not simple. It consist of a web of complex behaviours. Changing a culture cannot happen overnight; it happens through consistently displaying the right behaviours for a long period of time, so that it becomes a way of living.
