Some people have symptoms similar to those of flu after being infected with the HI-virus. These symptoms usually go away within a week to a month’s time. An individual can live with the HI-virus for years before becoming sick. Both men and women can develop infections in the mouth and women can even develop an infection in their private parts.

Indications that HIV has developed into AIDS include the following:

  • A fever that does not go away
  • Night sweats
  • Constant fatigue
  • Feeling sick
  • Weight loss
  • Swollen glands, for example in the neck, under the arms and in the groin
  • Diarrhoea for longer than two weeks
  • Severe headaches or depression
