Emotional disturbances, according to cognitive psychology are neither caused by outside events nor external circumstances. The cause of emotional disturbances is distorted thinking.

Therefore, it is possible to change the way you feel (emotion) by changing the way you think! As human beings we were created to have feelings and even to express them. As leaders and managers, we need to be responsible about the way in which we express our feelings and emotions.

As a manager you need to:

  • Understand that you will experience emotions in dealing with your staff and customers.
  • Understand and acknowledge that you will from time to time experience negative feelings about staff and customers or situations.
  • Understand why you feel that way.
  • Know how to take charge of the feeling and express it appropriately.
