PRP 8: Waste Management

Completion requirements
View

Most often waste contains a large number of spoilage microorganisms and possibly pathogens, particularly when it concerns animal waste. The systems for waste disposal should be constructed in such a way that contamination of water supplies and food products is avoided.

Spoiled food products need to be removed immediately. Another waste from food products has to be collected in lockable recipients, which can be clearly identified. This type of waste may be present in the rooms for a limited time if they do not spread a deviating odour.

The garbage cans should be in good condition and made of a washable, non-absorbent material. They need to be cleaned and disinfected on a regular base.

The PRP waste management should contain the following:

  • The different types of waste that are distinguished in the company (e.g., chemical waste, paper and cardboard, etc).
  • How the different types of waste are collected in the company (e.g., which recipients, colour of the containers, etc).
  • Who is responsible for the removal of waste during and after the production activities.
  • How are the different types of waste stored (e.g., cooled storage, outside, etc).
  • How are the different types of waste removed (contract with specialised companies).

Waste may not give rise to additional chemical, physical or microbiological contaminations. Waste may not cause bad smells or attract vermin. All the containers that are used for the collecting and storage of waste should be included in the cleaning and disinfection schedule.
