Coaching Model

The coaching model can be used to initiate a discussion with another person and it is also effective when the other person initiates the discussion. In some cases, the coach will need to determine where the other person is in the model. For example, if the other person initiates the discussion, he or she may already be “aware” of the opportunity for change.

Thus, the coach may choose to start the conversation with Step 2, “Explore Possibilities,” rather than Step 1. The key point is that this model is nothing more than a common-sense way of conducting a coaching session.

It should not be followed in some sort of lock-step way, rigidly applying the steps whether they “fit” or not. What is important is that the model be used as a guide and used only where appropriate.

What follows is a six-step model that the coach can use to coach others. In each step, there will be a brief explanation of why the step is necessary, followed by examples of questions that can be asked by the coach.
