Change implies that something familiar ends and that something different starts. The period between these two stages is transition. This is where people must learn to let go of the old and embrace the new. Usually it means moving from the familiar to the unknown. Even if the change is positive, it still has a psychological effect – as explained in Unit 1 and 2.

Change often involves an element of perceived danger and opportunity. When change is announced, the first response from people is usually to see it as a threat or a danger. When it happens people will fear and resist it. Once people start to get used to the change, they often realise that the change may lead to new opportunities and empowerment.
