Consider for a moment the beginnings of recorded history. Societies began to take shape over two thousand years ago. Initially, the pace of change was very slow. With the passing of eons (hundreds of years), the pace of change speeded up due to:

  • The invention of paper and the publication of books
  • Urbanisation
  • Advances in science and technology
  • Mechanisation – invention of machines, motorcars
  • Communication revolution – television, telephone, cell phones, etc.
  • The invention, in the second half of the 20th century, of computers

Early societies were primitive, and stressors were more physical in nature. In present society, stressors are, for the most part, psychological.
