As you evaluate yourself as a communicator, take into consideration your ability as a listener. Most of us listen at only 25% of our ability. How would your closest friends rate you? Your boss? Your family? Would some people suggest that you should talk less and listen more?

Listed below are some suggestions that can improve your listening skills. Tick those that are applicable to you.

I know how:

To send people signals though my eyes and body gestures so that they know I am listening.

To relax when communicating with others so they feel comfortable about adding their comments.

To slow my mind down when listening so I won’t anticipate what people say before they say it.

To improve my communication.

To avoid forming a reply before I hear the other person out.

Not to be defensive about my point of view during communication.

To keep my voice soft rather than loud and aggressive.
