Agriculture plays an important role in the global and local economy due to its role as a provider of food security, job creation, and effect on the larger agribusiness environment. Agriculture participates in a global environment. Any shocks or movements in one country can have a significant impact on the rest of the world. The choice of agricultural products depends on the location, weather, natural- and economic resources of the farmer and all products cannot be produced everywhere.
Agricultural production is not an isolated event and forms part of a greater value chain. All activities in the value chain add value to the initial product and aim to meet the needs of consumers. The agricultural value chain is consumer-driven while primary producers are price takers which means that they are not able to determine the price for their produce themselves; the price is discovered/determined through the value chain.
